NEXT STEPS

You’ve taken the first step-you’ve accepted Jesus into your heart. What’s next? Below are some exercises and passages to help guide you in your journey with Christ.

#1: SECURITY OF THE BELIEVER

Imagine yourself in a vault of Fort Knox. You are surrounded by the untold riches of gold bullion stored there. The door is firmly secured and will not be opened until morning. There is a fully functioning life support system inside the vault and ample food supply for a month. You are safe and secure.

In like manner, the believer finds himself safe and secure in the protective hands of a God who is able to keep him. The Scripture is clear about the fact that once a person becomes a Christian, the salvation of the believer is secure. Our faith rests not on the feelings of man but, on the facts found in the Bible.

Assurance of our salvation is a feeling. Security of the believer is a fact. We are secure whether we feel safe or not. Just like a person in a vault, they are safe from all harms from the outside world. To feel insecure because of an enemy on the outside would be silly.

However, most Christians today struggle with being assured of their salvation. We want to look at the fact of the security of the believer.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS & TOPICS

How do you know you are a Christian?

If you were to die right now, how sure are you that you would go to heaven?

Secure in God’s Hand

John 10:25-30

25Jesus answered, “I did tell you, but you do not believe. The miracles I do in my Father’s name speak for me,

26but you do not believe because you are not my sheep.

27My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

28I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.

29My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.

30I and the Father are one.”

Who has Eternal Life?

1 John 5:11-13

11And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

12He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.

13I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

John 1:2

2He was with God in the beginning.

John 3:16

16“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

John 5:18-24

18Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the
man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”

19“Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet.

20Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”

21Jesus declared, “Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.

22You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.

23Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.

24God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit.

John 20:24-29

24Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came.

25So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it.”

26A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”

27Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”

28Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

29Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

What is Eternal Life?

John 17:3

3Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.

Nothing can Separate us From God’s Love

Romans 8:31-39

31What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?

32He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all–how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

33Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies.

34Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died–more than that, who was raised to life–is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.

35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?

36As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”

37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

38For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,

39neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Made Alive in Christ

Ephesians 2:1-10

1As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,

2in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.

3All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.

4But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,

5made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions–it is by grace you have been saved.

6And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,

7in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God–

9not by works, so that no one can boast.

10For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Spirit’s Role

Romans 8:5-17

5Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.

6The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace;

7the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.

8Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.

9You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.

10But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness.

11And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

12Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation–but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it.

13For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live,

14because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

15For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”

16The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.

17Now if we are children, then we are heirs–heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

Galatians 5:16-24

16So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.

17For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want.

18But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law.

19The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery;

20idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions

21and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

23gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

24Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires.

Practicing Righteousness Proves Salvation

1 John 2:28-29

28And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.

29If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.

As a result of this lesson: If you were to die right now, how sure are you that you would go to heaven? Why?

#2: Forgiveness of Sin & Obedience

What happens when I sin after I become a Christian? Does God still love me? Am I still a Christian? What’s up – I thought Christians didn’t sin? What should I do? These questions and ones like them come to mind when a believer sins.

Coming to grips with how to deal with your sin after conversion is essential. Without a clear understanding of what to do or what to believe about forgiveness of sin will lead you to live a life of guilt, and cause an emotional rift between you and God. Sin separates man from God. Just look at the garden of Eden to see how man runs and hides from the presence of God when he sins. We are no different today. When we disobey God we emotionally and sometimes physically run and hide from God.

We have looked at the fact that as a believer, you are secure in your relationship with God. So, what happens when you sin? That’s what this lesson is about.

What was the Original Sin?

Genesis 2:16-17, 3:1-3

16And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;

17but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.”

1Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”

2The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,

3but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ “

How does sin happen?

James 1:13-15

13When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone;

14but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed.

15Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

1 John 2:15-17

15Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

16For everything in the world–the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does–comes not from the Father but from the world.

17The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.

1 Corinthians 10:13

13No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

Sin and needless suffering – What happened to David when he confessed his sin?

Psalms 32:1-7

1Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.

2Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord does not count against him and in whose spirit is no deceit.

3When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long.

4For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. Selah

5Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord “-and you forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah

6Therefore let everyone who is godly pray to you while you may be found; surely when the mighty waters rise, they will not reach him.

7You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance. Selah

Confessing sin – What do these verses say about the importance of confessing sin?

1 John 1:5-10

5This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.

6If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.

7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

8If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

10If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.

James 5:16

16Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

Complete Forgiveness – What reasons does this give for why we can be sure God forgives us?

Psalms 103:8-14

8The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.

9He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever;

10he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.

11For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him;

12as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

13As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him;

14for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.

Our Ongoing Battle against the Flesh – Summarize what this is saying about our struggle?

Romans 7:14-8:2

14We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin.

15I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

16And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.

17As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.

18I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.

19For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do–this I keep on doing.

20Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.

21So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me.

22For in my inner being I delight in God’s law;

23but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members.

24What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?

25Thanks be to God–through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.

1Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,

2because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.

Obedience

We are called to obey our God and King! But when we sin, we must confess our sin and believe that God has forgiven us (1 John 1:9). We must forsake our sin and yield our lives to the Holy Spirit who lives in us. Learning to keep short accounts with the Lord will lead to a fulfilling, joyful walk with God.

Homework: Memorize 1 John 5:11-13

#3: Quiet Time

The world revolves around relationships. Sometimes we get confused and lose sight of the relational aspects and focus on the many things we need to get done. Or we substitute social media interaction for deeper face-to-face relationships. What a tragedy!

Unfortunately, our relationship with God is subject to the same pressures. We focus on what God wants us to do, often based on what we have heard from others about God. We can get caught up in trying to live for God rather than having a personal relationship with God. Someone put it this way: “We know a lot about God, but we don’t know God.” How do we change this around? A simple solution is the daily Quiet Time.

This one habit will greatly increase your experience of a fulfilling Christian life, where you are increasingly becoming more like God and growing in your relationship with Him. It has been said that we become like what we worship. In our daily time with God, we worship Him and become more like Him. Relationships are built around time with another person. Learn to spend time with God and you will never be the same.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS & TOPICS

What is the purpose of the Quiet Time?

One Thing Is Needed – What was the one thing Mary was doing that pleased Jesus?

Luke 10:38-42

38As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him.

39She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said.

40But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

41“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things,

42but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Knowing God – What do people usually boast about? What should we boast about?

Jeremiah 9:23-24

23This is what the Lord says: “Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches,

24but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,” declares the Lord.

The Goal – What was the goal of the writer of this passage of Scripture?

Philippians 3:7-11

7But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ.

8What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ

9and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ–the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith.

10I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,

11and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.

Content of Quiet Time – What are some ways God uses the Bible to change our lives?

2 Timothy 3:16-17

16All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,

17so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Example of Jesus – Even when Jesus was busy, what did He do?

Luke 5:16

16But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.

#4: Impacting Eternity

Do you want to have an impact in this world? Not only while you are here but, long after you are gone? Do you want to impact eternity? The Bible teaches that there are only 3 things that last forever and that we can invest in. God, the Word of God, and the lives of men and women. Money, prestige, fame, power, success will someday pass away, but God, His Word, and people will never pass away. Unless you invest your life in these 3 things, your life will not impact eternity.

Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He laid out a simple plan. If you follow Jesus’ plan, you will impact eternity. Let’s take a look at God’s awesome plan.

The Plan

Matthew 28:18-20

18Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

As followers of Jesus, we are called to “Go and Make ______________.” (verse 19)

Are you willing to obey Jesus? _________

What is a Disciple?

Matthew 4:19

19“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”

Jesus said, “Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men.”

A disciple is someone who is:

  1. ___________ Jesus.
  2. is Being ___________ by Jesus
  3. is fishing for people: Making ______________.

You have already made the decision to follow Jesus. What do you think you can do to allow Jesus to Change You into someone who can help others become disciples?

Four Generations of Disciples

2 Timothy 2:2

2And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.

Paul taught

Timothy was to teach the truth to ______________________ who would be able pass it on to ____________.

Addition vs. Multiplication

Which is better? (a) Get $10 every day for 30 days or (b) Get 1 cent and double the amount for 30 days? (1¢, 2¢, 4¢, 8¢, 16¢, etc).

Grounded in 4 Areas

A disciple of Jesus is growing in prayer, knowing the Bible, fellowship with other Christians, and sharing our faith with others.

  1. In which of these areas are you the strongest now? ______________________________________
  2. How do you think you might help someone else grow in your strongest area? ______________________________________
  3. Name some people you might be able to help to become disciples of Jesus? _______________________________________
